Project "Prefeasibility study of restoration/rehabilitation of the wetland ecosystem of international value “Kartal Lake”

Duration: 1 year (started in June 2010)



Project aim:



Elaboration and integrated assessment of the possible ways of restoration/rehabilitation of the wetland ecosystem of international value “Kartal Lake” in consideration of the adjoining territories.

Project objectives:



  • Identification of the main problems and needs of the local community and key stakeholders, based on the utilisation of natural resources of the “Kartal Lake” wetland ecosystem and adjoining territories;
  • Justification of environmental and socio-economic reasonability of restoration/rehabilitation of the “Kartal Lake” wetland, including definition of the aim and objectives of restoration; 
  • Identification of the optimal and possible at the present stage environmental and hydrological conditions for the “Kartal Lake” wetland in consideration of the retrospective analysis;
  • Elaboration of the engineering options of restoration/rehabilitation of the “Kartal Lake” wetland and assessment of their costs;
  • Assessment of risks for local residents and infrastructure, which each of the restoration options possesses; 
  • Elaboration of proposals on optimisation of land use on the adjoining territories, including fish ponds, islands between Zarza and Luzars channels near Orlovka settlement, Dervent and Gradeshka lakes, etc. 

Expected results:

  • Report “Prefeasibility study of restoration/rehabilitation of the wetland ecosystem of international value “Kartal Lake”, including proposal on optimisation of land use on the adjoining territories, including fish ponds, islands between Zarza and Luzars channels near Orlovka settlement, Dervent and Gradeshka lakes, etc.
  • GIS data-base containing data of field studies, expert assessments and remote sensing. 
  • The series of GIS-based thematic maps for illustrating the report and recommendations on restoration:
    • Land use map of the "Kartal Lake" wetland and adjoining territories
    • Vegetation map of the "Kartal Lake" wetland and adjoining territories
    • Map of Ornithological value of the "Kartal Lake" wetland
    • Map of Biological value of the "Kartal Lake" wetland
    • Overview map of the "Kartal Lake" wetland (updated based on field studies and satellite images analysis)
    • Map of possible variants of restoration/rehabilitation of the "Kartal Lake" wetland

The project is implemented with the support from the Danube-Carpathian Programme of the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF DCP)
